About Us
Who We Are
The SCS Group, Inc. was founded in July of 1990 by Stan Schoonover. Sensing a need for precision machine tool re-manufacturing with an emphasis on modern proven computer controls, he started The SCS Group. At first, most of the work was performed at customer sites. Stan began with specialized services in the grinder field including roll grinder control retrofits and electronic crowning systems for Sendzimir Mill roll grinders. Stan added to the SCS repertoire, the retrofitting of CNC controls to various machining centers.Stan Schoonover has an engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was a project engineer for the Jones & Lamson Machine Company of Springfield, Vermont, where he was involved in the early development of Numerically Controlled Turret Lathes. Then as an Engineering Manager for Landis Tool in Waynesboro, PA, Stan pioneered the use of electronic and computer controls on precision cylindrical grinders, obtaining several patents in that field. In 1996, Stephen Schoonover joined The SCS Group as Chief Mechanical Engineer. A value-added steel company was looking for a very large machining center to finish plates for the crane and lift industry. The SCS Group proposal was accepted and included the design, fabrication, assembly, and control of a 200 by 100 inch vertical spindle machining center with a 24 slot tool-changer.Stephen attended Drexel University. He was involved in the development of a control system for a large Liebherr gear hobber, and its subsequent total rebuilding. The SCS Group’s success there resulted in several more gear hobber remanufactures and retrofits. In 1997, The SCS Group built a new facility to accommodate the manufacturing of electrical control systems and small machine construction and rebuilding. A facility expansion is presently underway.
What We Do
We offer project engineering and technicians for problems associated with all aspects of machine tools including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. We provide a single source of expertise in the rebuilding and/or retrofitting of precision machinery. We remanufacture precision machine tools and also build special purpose machines from the "ground up". We offer Conceptual Design Engineering using the latest technology in Programmable Logic Controls (PLC), Computer Numerical Controls (CNC), Operator Interface Terminals (OIT), and Motion Controls (MC), through training. SCS even offers maintenance service after installation. Procurement, assembly, programming, and drafting, are just a few of the additional steps in which SCS can be at your side.
